What is Character Counts!

In October of 1993, the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition was formed by 27 national organizations to translate the principles of the Aspen Declaration into tangible character development strategies. The strengths of the collaborative model of character education based on a common vocabulary was demonstrated by the diversity of the charter organizations that formed the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition. Currently the Coalition has more than 500 member organizations like ours.

Character Counts! of Oswego and Montgomery was created as a nonprofit organization to promote character education and to recognize good character in our area based on these beliefs. Our organization was formed in 2003 by a group of people in our community who believed that building good character is crucial to raising responsible citizens.

The Character Counts! Coalition of Montgomery and Oswego is involved in various events throughout the year.  The most important event is the Award Winning Character Program recognition at the Village of Oswego Board Meetings.  The Coalition Board meets  quarterly to review nominations for the Award Winning Character  Program.  The recipients of the nominations are recognized at the Village Board Meeting where they receive a t-shirt and a certificate.  The recipients are also invited to walk in the PrairieFest Parade with the Coalition members.
